Water Audits

The purpose of water audits is to identify how much water is being lost and the value of the loss. The overall goal is to help the city select and implement programs to reduce the distribution system losses.

Benefits of water audits include:

  • Reduced Water Losses - Water audits and leak detection are necessary first steps in a leak repair program.
  • Financial Improvement - Water audits and leak detection programs can increase revenues from customers who have been undercharged, lower the total cost of wholesale supplies and reduce treatment and pumping costs.
  • Increased Knowledge Of The Distribution - During a water audit, distribution personnel become familiar with the distribution system, including the location of mains and valves.
  • More Efficient Use Of Existing Supplies - Reducing water loss helps stretch existing supplies to meet increased needs.
  • Safeguarding Public Health And Property - Improved maintenance of the water system helps reduce the likelihood of property damage.
  • Improved Public Relations - The public appreciates maintenance of the water system. Field teams performing the water audits and leak detection or repairs provide assurance that the system is being maintained.
  • Reduced Legal Liability - By protecting public property and health and by providing detailed information about the distribution system, water audits and leak detection help protect the city from expensive lawsuits.
